Use of Table of Contents (ToC) Sheet for Effective Navigation and Model Overview
What is the purpose of ToC?
- Navigation: Having a ToC sheet in the financial model helps both the client and the modeler for effective navigation across different worksheets in large models.
- Model Walkthroughs: It is also very helpful to give a model walkthrough to anybody It summarises the number and type of sheets, i.e. different types of input, calculation, and report worksheets in the model.
Tips to build, manage and how to use the ToC sheet
- Keep the order of the worksheets in the model same as what it is on the ToC sheet. This shows consistency and professionalism in terms of model design.
- Use of consistent colours on ToC sheet to depict the different types of sheets. This is a great practice when it comes to giving the walkthrough of the model to the clients.
- Creating and using the hyperlinks, one can navigate to a sheet just by clicking on it. Also, it is highly recommended to use Range names (created in cell A1 of every worksheet) for creating hyperlinks on ToC sheet instead of Worksheet name as they will work even if the sheet name is changed later.
- Add inter-sheet direct links as formulas in the cells of ToC, so that the modeler/user can navigate to a sheet just by use of the keyboard shortcut ‘CTRL + [’.
- Add a hyperlink for ToC at the top of every worksheet in the model, so that the user can easily jump back to the ToC from anywhere in the model. This is helpful for effective navigation across the model.
- Ensure to keep this updated with any worksheets added / deleted in the model.
- Works effectively well for both, the clients (who usually uses mouse to navigate) and modelers (who prefers to use keyboard shortcut for navigation).
